Salt Lakes, Chott el-Gharsa

The tiny North African country of Tunisia has a surprisingly diverse landscape. One of the more unusual and breathtaking sites is the Chott el-Jérid Salt Lake. The bright white of the salt glitters in the sunlight and is juxtaposed with strange and colourful salt sculptures and installations.
The salt lakes comprising Tunisia's lowest point, Chott el-Gharsa, at 17 m below sea level. In the far south, the area of the salt lakes merges with the Sahara Desert, which covers about 40% of Tunisia.
